BRIEFS

Artist Dies on Stage
Kyiv.  The conductor of the Ukrainian National Opera, Oleh Riabov, died suddenly from a heart attack during an opera rehearsal of "Cavalleria Rusticana".  The distinguished musician had worked in the national opera for over 30 years.  On March 22nd, the opera theater paid homage to this well-known artist with a performance of Verdi's Requiem which was performed instead of the planned opera program.

--Yaroslav Davydovsky, UAM.

World Bank Grant

Icon Collection Restored
Ivano-Frankivsk.  Artist Mykola Kanius along with students of the Art-Graphics Department of Prykarpatskyj University have restored a collection of icons dating from the 17th-19th centuries.  This collection, which presently belongs to the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Museum, was saved from total destruction during the post-war period when churches in Halychyna were completely closed down.  Many of the restored icons depict local professional and primitivist styles representative of the various iconography schools in Kosiv, Rohatyn and Dolyna.

Spivakov's "Virtuosi" in the Capital
Kyiv.  "The Virtuosi of Moscow" under the direction of Volodymyr Spivakov will collaborate with the Italian choir Santa-Cecilia and soloists from Poland, Germany, and the United States in a concert performance of Mozart's Requiem.  The performance will take place on April 22nd at the Ukrainian National Opera.

--Anushavan Mesropian, UAM.

Variation of Style '96
Zaporizhia.  The aroma of French perfumes greeted the spring season in this industrial center of Eastern Ukraine.  An atmosphere of European charm dominated the Glinka Concert Hall with a theatrical fashion show "Variation of Style '96" where models from Kyiv, Zaporizhia, and the Kharkiv filial of Slava Zaytseva's House of Fashion participated.

MUSIC

Ricercare
Ivano-Frankivsk.  A recital presenting the works of two young composers Andrij Lehkyj and Vitalij Manyk took place in the Ivano-Frankivsk music college on March 27th.
The concert, an unusual attraction for Ivano-Frankivsk, was entitled "An Evening of Avant-Garde".  The event was at the same time a presentation of a newly-formed ensemble of new music "Ricercare" (from the Italian "to search" from which originates the musical term "ricercare", a polyphonic form of the early baroque period).
The most impressive compositions were presented by Andrij Lehkyj "Obiter dictum" for flute, clarinet, trombone, and percussion, "Double Fly" for two violins, and an unexpected folk piece "Song" for four voices, 2 violins, cello, and piano.

--Pavlo Hrechka, UAM.

Horowitz's Laureates Tour America
New York.  The winners of the First International Competition of Young Pianists dedicated to the memory of Volodymyr Horowitz (see UAM Volume 1, Issue 17) were invited to the United States for a series of concert performances.  Among the invited participants were the competition's head jury member, composer and pianist Ivan Karabits, as well as laureates of the first and second prizes, Oleksij Yemtsov and Oleksij Koltakov.  They will begin their regional concert tour in major art centers including New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC and other cities.

Mykhailo Brylynsky
Lviv.  An evening dedicated to the 100th birthday anniversary celebration of well-known Ukrainian employer and owner of the only Ukrainian "Bell Foundry" in Halychyna, Mykhailo Brylynsky, took place on March 22nd in the People's House.
The solemn evening was organized by the "Prosvita" Organization, Shevchenko Scientific Society, and the Brylynsky family.  The program included performances by Lviv musicians and the Lviv chamber choir "Gloria".  Those present also had the opportunity to hear musical performances by members of the Brylynsky family: Bohdan (violin), Maksym (diplomate of the International Competition of Young Violinists Bohodar Kotorovych), Halyna Brylynsky-Blazhkevch (laureate of the All-Ukrainian Competition of Pianists named after Mykola Lysenko).
Among the foundry's products included a bell for St.  George's Cathedral in Lviv, bas-reliefs of Taras Shevchenko and Markian Shashkevych, and memorial statues.  Mykhailo Brylynsky was murdered by the NKVD in 1941.

--Antony Potoczniak, UAM.

STAGE

Art Berezillia '96
Kyiv.  The Fifth International Festival of Experimental Theaters "Art Berezillia '96" commenced on March 27th, also observed throughout the world as International Theater Day.  This year's festival, which features play performances, workshops, and exhibitions, is dedicated to the theme of "creative collaboration and the problems of theater synthesis".
The festival began with a performance by the Ukrainian Spiritual Theater "Voskresinnya" and will conclude with a "festival within a festival" with the production of "Ecology of the Soul" which raises the issues of individuality in extreme situations.
Difficulties accompanying the festival, according to organizer Sergey Proskuryn, should not influence the great variety of this year's festival repertoire: the Polish theater of "Eight day", Saint Petersburg "Litsediyi", and Japanese theater.  Numerous theatrical premieres and art exhibitions should present theater-goers with a bouquet of diverse impressions and pleasant moments.

Vadym Pysaryev's Benefit Concert
Kyiv.  Ballet star Vadym Pysaryev (see UAM Volume 2, Issue 1) recently organized a benefit concert in the National Opera of Ukraine.  The event was also a presentation of his first major work as choreographer in a Ukrainian-Norwegian joint project in the production of the ballet "Peer Gynt".  The music to this ballet was written by Edvard Grieg.
The Adagio movement of this new ballet, as seen in the performance by Pysaryev and his constant dance partner and wife Inna Dorofeyeva, promises to give birth to a harmonious combination of diverse dance styles: modern dance and contemporary movements of Marta Grechen and Morris Bezhar, Norwegian folk dances, and the "good-old" classics.

LITERATURE

Ukrainian Manuscript Book
Kyiv.  A new encyclopaedic publication by Professor Jakym Zapaska "The Ukrainian Manuscript Book" was presented on March 6th in the National Museum of Ukrainian Literature.  This monumental work is an attempt to trace chronologically the development of national book art in Ukraine.  The best-known Ukrainian manuscripts dating from the Kyiv princely eras to the 18th century are analyzed and described in this publication.
During the 11th century, court scribes of the great Kyivan princes provided a large body of art manuscripts which remain today significant cultural relics of Kyiv-Rus history.  Today Kyiv has very few of these cultural treasures in its possession. At present, the only extant manuscript in Kyiv is an Old-Slavonic missal "Kyiv Hlaholychni Lystky".
Many works such as the Ostromyrova Yevanhelia [Ostromyrov Gospel] (1056-1057), Izbornyk Sviatoslava (1073), as well as other well-known artistically decorative and ancient manuscripts of Slavonic culture are presently located in Moscow.  A matter of fact, a similar fate befell many other ancient writings of Ukraine.
The work by Jakym Zapaska, prepared for publication by the Lviv Publisher "Svit" and printed in Priaev, Slovakia by "Polygraf", is illustrated with 250 masterpieces of national and international significance, including the Ostromyrov Gospel, a unique family portrait of the Kyiv Princes of Sviatoslav, and Renaissance decorations of the excellent Perecopytskyj Gospel.
