The Les Kurbas Theatre of Lviv was founded in 1988 by Volodymyr Kuchynsky and a group of young actors who, like the celebrated Ukrainian director Les Kurbas and his colleagues in 1918, found themselves to be "newly trained+stuck amid old repertoires and longing for something more." Since its inception, the company has grown into one of Ukraine's most critically acclaimed theatres both in Ukraine and in Europe. The emphasis of the theatre's work is equally divided between training, rehearsal and production and focuses upon the development of the actor's individual and collective use of plastics, movement and voice. Its productions of Games For Faust and Grace-given Erodii have been invited to (and invariably taken prizes at) numerous international theatre festivals, including Lviv's Golden Lion, Moscow's Chekhov and Slavic Laurel, and Poland's Kontakt festivals. The theatre also hosts its own biannual festival, "Theatre: Method and Practice, and has collaborated in projects and workshops at the Gardzience Centre of Theatre Studies (Poland), The Workcentre of Jerzy Grotowski (Italy), Anatolii Vasiliev's Studio at the School of Dramatic Art (Russia), The Saratoga International Theatre Institute (New York), and has conducted its own workshops throughout Europe and America.
